VineBrook Homes is an internally managed Midwest/Heartland-based real estate investment company, focused on acquiring, renovating, leasing and operating single-family homes as rental properties.  We began operations in late 2007.  We own or manage over 6,000 Single-Family Rental homes (SFR) in 12 states and 18 major Midwest/Heartland markets.  Additionally, VineBrook Homes is currently undergoing the next major expansion of its strategy, expecting to drive toward 10,000-15,000+ Homes.

Job Description Summary

This position will be multi-disciplinary and focus on assisting with federal and state tax reviewpreparation and filings. The position will serve multiple managers and/or other more senior managers within the companyAdditionally, it will require interaction with the corporate accounting & finance groups as well as other business groups within the company. This position helps file various tax returns, ensuring that they are in compliance with local, state, and federal laws. This includes collecting and preparing tax data, reviewing returns, performing tax research, and maintaining records.  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist Tax Manager in compiling LP and REIT federal income tax returns for review outside accounting firms 
  • Assist Tax Manager in filing state and local tax returns  
  • Prepare and manage federal & state tax return extensions   
  • Prepare and manage state sales and use tax returns 
  • Prepare and manage state franchise and excise taxes 
  • Prepare and manage state gross receipts and CAT taxes 
  • Manage real estate and property tax bills, reassessments, and opportunities 
  • Compile and Maintain tax guidance for expansion markets and states 
  • Prepare and manage 1099 reporting 
  • Prepare annual Secretary of State filings 
  • Manage State Legal Representation relationships (CT Corp) 
  • Recommend process improvement and document procedures for tax operations manual 
  • Prepare tax basis calculations 
  • Perform tax research as needed to support tax positions to be taken on tax returns; interface with Tax Manager to implement tax planning opportunities 
  • Assist with the maintenance of the tax work plan each year 

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Minimum of 2 years' experience in tax (/ REIT experience a plus) 
  • Undergraduate degree in Accounting or Finance from top tier accounting school with a minimum 3.0 GPA 
  • CPA or qualified for CPA exam 
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills 
  • Very detail oriented and strong knowledge of Excel
